North Carolina Values Coalition
North Carolina Values Coalition states they believe, "humans are created in the image of God as either male or female and that life is precious". This observance of a binary gender construction does not allow for the fluidity of gender. The NC Values Coalition glorify fundamentalist Christian values and sell them as "common sense." On one of the signs in the image above says "women & children deserve better." What about transgender women? They deserve better too!
Judith Butler has a theory of gender which argues gender to be performative: "Performativity cannot be understood outside of a process of iterability, a regularized and constrained repetition of norms. And this repetition is not performed by a subject; this repetition is what enables a subject and constitutes the temporal condition for the subject" (Butler 95). Butler goes onto state that gender, as well as being ritualized, is influenced by taboos and the force of prohibition. Gender is a construction that is temporal as well. Because the repetition of these norms is not preformed by the subject, gender belongs to the social construction of a time and place. This is not to say that gender is not real to people and that it does not have an impact on individuals. It does.
